In 2006, my journey in Long Term Care started. Fresh out of high school, I was enthusiastic about contributing positively by providing care to others. Starting as a nurses aide, a demanding yet rewarding position, played a significant role in molding me into the nurse I am today. Despite facing numerous obstacles that could have deterred me, I persisted and achieved my goal of becoming a Registered Nurse in 2016.

Working as an aide has allowed me to grow as a more compassionate, diligent, and empathetic individual, qualities I believe are crucial for a skilled nurse. In long-term care settings, it takes a joint effort from CNAs, nurses, and support staff to ensure the residents' well-being. Beginning as an aide before transitioning to a nurse has shown me the significance of teamwork in delivering quality care. Learning to handle pressure and recognize changes in residents to promptly inform the nurse and provide the necessary care has been part of my experience. Becoming a nurse has enabled me to be more supportive of my CNAs, assisting them when needed in caring for our residents, thus fostering a healthier work environment.

After working as a floor nurse on a med surg unit in a rural community, I realized my true passion lay with the geriatric community. I found fulfillment in being the support for those who have no family by their side during their final moments. Witnessing their journey from being weak and sick upon admission to regaining strength and walking out within a few months is truly inspiring. These experiences are what anchor me and reaffirm my decision to pursue a career in nursing.

Since the pandemic in 2020, healthcare workers have faced increased challenges that have impacted staffing, care provision, and regulatory requirements aimed at ensuring resident safety. This situation has heightened the stress experienced by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Instead of witnessing compassion and care, there has been a shift towards burnout, frustration, and a focus on financial gain. It is important to remember the initial reasons for choosing this profession and prioritize the well-being of residents despite the stress and fatigue that may arise.

In conclusion, if nursing is your true passion, advancing in your career through teamwork and striving to progress while staying connected to your origins is crucial. Patient care must always remain our highest priority, and teamwork is essential for success.

In the fast-paced world of nursing, taking care of others is second nature. But what about taking care of yourself? One often overlooked aspect of a nurse's well-being is foot health. Standing or running around for long shifts can put a toll on your feet and legs, leading to discomfort and fatigue. This is where compression socks come to the rescue!

What are Compression Socks?

Compression socks are specially designed garments that provide graduated pressure to your legs, helping to improve blood flow and reduce swelling. They are not just a fashion statement; they are a practical solution to combat the physical demands of a nurse's job.

  • Improved Circulation: The gentle pressure applied by compression socks promotes better circulation, reducing the risk of conditions like varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis.

  • Reduced Swelling: Long hours on your feet can cause swelling, which is not only uncomfortable but can also be a sign of poor circulation. Compression socks can help alleviate swelling and discomfort.

  • Enhanced Comfort: The cushioning and support provided by compression socks can make a significant difference in how your feet and legs feel at the end of a shift.
